Shell Beach, created to provide a summer retreat from the heat of the Central California valleys, was nothing but pea fields around 75 years ago when it was bought and developed by businessman Floyd Calvert. In 1926, Calvert paid $45,000 for 41 acres between the ocean and the highways and began development. Due to the Great Depression and World War II, Calvert was nearly wiped out. He survived, although it took 20 years to sell the first 456 lots on the land he owned.
It wasn't until after World War II that Shell Beach changed from a resort area for residents of the San Joaquin Valley to a residential community. Today the area is one of California's most popular tourist destinations, offering visitors spectacular ocean views and unmatched recreational opportunities. The city's proximity to Central Valley and the "half-way mark" between Los Angeles and San Francisco make this area an ideal getaway.
